Japan’s Aftermath, 2 Weeks Later

So because all of the news is no longer on Japan and is almost entirely focused on the conflict in Libya, I wanted to just take the time to post a bunch of pictures that I found on a Flickr photostream that I used last week to display pictures of the aftermath of the earthquake/tsunami in Japan.

My thoughts and prayers still go out to the families out there who have been struggling to rebuild their lives. Slowly but surely our aid will bring them back on their feet. If you haven’t been able to donate your money to the reputable organizations lending aid to the victims of the tragedy in Japan, please find it in your heart to do so. If you already have, I thank you and I am sure the people of Japan thank you as well.

As of this posting, the current stats in terms of lives lost, people missing, and cost of damage is as follows:

The death toll from the massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan’s northeast coast has topped 10,000, two weeks after the disaster struck, Kyodo news reports.

From the Herald Sun
The National Police Agency, responsible for compiling statistics from different prefectures affected, could not immediately confirm that figure.

There are fears of a much higher toll from the disaster, which flattened entire towns along the Pacific coast of the country’s main island of Honshu.

In its report yesterday, the National Police Agency said that 9811 people had been confirmed dead and 17,541 officially listed as missing – a total of 27,352 – as of 9 pm local time (11pm AEDT) as a result of the March 11 catastrophe.

From BBC UK
The Japanese government has put the rebuilding cost of the March 11 earthquake at $309bn(£191.8bn).

Let us also not forget that the aftereffects of the disaster still looms in the form of the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant that was heavily damaged during the tsunami. The radiation is so bad that although there hasn’t been a total meltdown, the fumes that had to be released into the air to cool down the reactors have gotten into the food and water supply, which is now running low. Also, because of the fear of harmful contamination, sales of seafood (which Japan’s economy heavily relies on) have plummeted severely. I cannot feel guilty that I’m doing fine here in the United States, but people in a rich country like Japan cannot get the basic necessities to survive. I hope our donations are serving them well.

Here are all of the pictures from the photostream. I thought it would be best to just link all 150+ of the pictures because it would be faster to scroll down and view them all at once, rather than to go through a Flickr slideshow:

*DISCLAIMER* I am pretty sure all / a lot of these images are not taken by the owner of the photostream I took the pictures from. I didn’t really want to go take the images from Yahoo! news or something but I will have to say it was convenient for me to find all of the pictures on the Flickr.

Stranded.

Growing up in the aftermath.

So after seeing all of the images, it’s hard to imagine what has happened. I hope that everything will be good in the end. Prayers to the victims in Japan once again.

There are a lot of automotive blogs who have been raising money for the relief efforts. Here are just a few:

Flying in Unity

Hey guys,

I just wanted to go ahead and share this with all of you.

I intern at a start-up company called “Goodjoe” and we are a t-shirt and apparel company that unites artists with non-profits. The basic premise is that for every shirt sold, a dollar of it will go to community-nominated non-profit organizations.

In light of the recent events in Japan, Goodjoe’s artists collaborated on a t-shirt design that represented Japanese culture. 100% of the proceeds would go directly to GlobalGiving.org’s Relief fund.

If you like the design or want to help and get a shirt for your efforts, make sure to check out the shirt. It is called: Flying in Unity

Our thoughts and prayers go to those affected by the devastation in Japan.

Here is a quick description of the shirt:
On March 11, 2011, the north coast of Japan was hit by a horrible tsunami after an 8.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred 80 miles offshore. Goodjoe and our passionate community of artists have collaborated to bring you the Flying in Unity t-shirt to raise funds and to inspire others to contribute in whatever way they can. Each of the participating artists created a crane or a bird as a positive thought to send toward the people affected by this disaster. Inspiration from Paper Cranes for Japan

100% of the proceeds will be donated directly to GlobalGiving.org’s Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. Our goal is to raise $1000 and we will report the results of our fundraising efforts at the end of this two week campaign.

Goodjoe would like to thank all the participating artists for donating their time and Boots for piecing together all the cranes and birds into a unified flock.

Part two — Japanese media coverage:

The Yomiuri Shimbun is the greatest daily in Japan

I would keep all of these newspapers. It contains a piece of history, and only means that much more when you’re part of it.

Japan’s Earthquake and Tsunami Aftermath Pictures Pt. 1

This post will be dedicated mostly to pictures found regarding the aftermath of the devastation left in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Japan.

This deviates from the usual posts regarding cars and the automotive industry, but seeing as how 99% of the world has turned their eyes toward Japan, opened their hearts and are donating whatever they can to help the people of Japan, it only helps to show what it’s like to be a regular Japanese citizen amidst the rubble and debris.
I will attempt to update this post as much as possible, or if I find multiple pictures from one post, I’ll simply make one post per person. I won’t show anything related to blood, gore, or otherwise. Seeing the destruction of the buildings alone cause many people to watch in shock. Media footage cannot be the only thing that people should rely on when attempting to assess the situation there.

With that said, here are the first batch of pictures that I have found:

Earthquake in Japan 03/11/2011

I pray for those in Japan at this time. I hope they are all safe and I can only imagine what many are going through right now.
I also pray for those who are current in the surrounding countries. I hope they are ready for the incoming tsunamis.

According to statistics, this is the largest earthquake in Japanese history to hit the country.

Imagine, they are used to earthquakes and tsunamis, but they weren’t prepared for this.

On a side note, let’s pray for RWB as Chiba was hit hard by the 8.9 magnitude earthquake.

Once again, please keep all who are affected by this crazy earthquake in your prayers at this time.

*Update: Japan is currently experiencing aftershocks, and it seems as if it’s only getting worse..
